FranU Recognized as Louisiana’s Only Age-Friendly University
April 7, 2026

Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University is the sole Louisiana partner in the Age-Friendly University (AFU) Global Network, a distinction that highlights the University’s commitment to serving individuals across the lifespan.
The AFU Global Network is an international movement of higher education institutions dedicated to promoting healthy aging and increasing educational opportunities for all age groups through research, health and wellness, community engagement and more.
Membership reflects the University’s dedication to the Ten Principles of an Age-Friendly University, which encourage intergenerational learning, lifelong educational opportunities and a deeper understanding of the needs and contributions of older adults.
FranU’s Gerontology Program spearheads the University’s involvement, collaborating with the AFU Global Network to reshape how society approaches aging. This recognition affirms FranU’s role in preparing students not only to meet the healthcare needs of an aging population, but also to celebrate the gifts, experiences and wisdom that older adults bring to their communities.
This moment marks a significant step forward in our collective commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for individuals of all ages in academia,” said Alicia Bates, Director of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at FranU. “Together, we will work towards building a global community where individuals of all ages feel valued, respected and empowered to thrive.”
As part of this global network, FranU joins other institutions around the world committed to creating inclusive opportunities for older adults, shaping public understanding of aging and building stronger, more connected communities.
